Letter from the General Manager Regarding the Operational Closure Decision

Dec 19, 2023 – 3:00pm

Dearest Bluewood Family and Friends,

Mother Nature’s throwing us a “no-hitter” thus far at the Mountain. It is with a crushed soul that Bluewood must suspend operations until the next storm cycle. We have dug every pocket and found every stash of snow available to place on the hill. However, there’s nothing left to grab. The hill is no longer supporting the fun vibe nor the value we wish to provide.

Looking at the forecast, we need to muscle through two days of warmer temps. The high-pressure system then breaks down, cools off, and brings precipitation. Currently, there isn’t a measure of what’s coming, though “snow likely” is more positive than a few days ago. The operational plan is to see what December 22nd and 23rd deliver. If the 23rd storm delivers substance, we will open on Sunday for Christmas Eve. Historically, This day has been shortened with a 2 pm closure to ensure our employees can enjoy the Christmas holiday with their friends and family. We will honor this tradition and extend the $40.00 early season discounted ticket. Christmas Day would remain closed as scheduled, firing back up on the 26th. Please look for communication on all our channels on Saturday the 23rd at 4:00 pm update. This is a gameday decision.

The Team at Bluewood understands this news may be frustrating, and I assure you, we feel the frustration with you. Bluewood suspending operations impacts so many on multiple levels. Our employees rely on the work and the small communities of Dayton, Waitsburg, and Prescott that feed their families because you visit their shops, restaurants, and lodging facilities. We know there is great pressure to refire operations, and we will do everything in our power to do so. We are also very aware that without you, our skiers and riders who support us, we would cease to exist. And for that, we are forever grateful. It’s our job to provide you with the experience and value you deserve.

It’s important to remember, despite not being open and ripping the trees as we did last season at this time, it’s still very early, and we are remaining optimistic despite the whisperings of long-term outlooks. This being my 24th season in the Snowsport industry, winter can start late, and it’s clear this is happening now. And if you look nationally, it’s happening everywhere!

I’ve spoken with the GM of White Pass, and they will honor our exchange during this time of suspended operations. Blackout dates exist, so you should check their website on the day of to ensure they are not SOLD OUT. Since White Pass is on the same POS system as Bluewood, you’ll need to create a White Pass account and purchase a $5 RFID card to save time at the POS. Our Passes and accounts are not transferable at this time.

Again, we can’t thank you enough for your support over the years. You are Bluewood, and we can’t wait to have you back.

Sincerely,
Pete Korfiatis
General Manager
